Extension of the Chilean residence permit
As you know, our Unimog has been in the workshop for a long time – and our tourist permit was about to expire. We therefore had to apply for an extension in good time. As it took us quite some time to gather all the information and translate a lot of it into German, we thought we’d write a few words about it here.

1. general information on the extension of the Chilean residence permit
Chile is a beautiful country that many travelers want to enjoy for longer than the usual length of stay allows. With a German or Austrian passport, you can currently obtain a residence permit for 90 days. Here is the link to the Foreign Office in Germany and here is the link for Austrians.
If you don’t have enough time or – like us – unforeseen events intervene, you can easily extend your visa. We had our extension in our pockets within 24 hours. It is important that you prepare a few things beforehand.
2. what you should prepare in advance
- Passport copy
- Proof of finances: We simply submitted a bank statement, as figures are easier to understand internationally than rental or employment contracts. If you have such documents in Spanish, you can of course also use them.
- PDI (Tarjeta Única Migratoria) residence permit: This is the small receipt you received when you entered the country.
- PDF format: All documents must be in PDF format and may not be larger than 2 MB each.
- Credit card: The fee for the extension was 100 USD for us in December 2024.
3. step-by-step instructions for online renewal
As the website is in Spanish (the English version didn’t work for us), here are some simple instructions:
Go to the following website:
https://tramites.extranjeria.gob.cl/home/procesos/1
If the link does not work, just search Google for:
„Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria Chile“
Then carry out the following steps on the page:
- Click on „Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria“:
→ select „Ir al Tramité“. - Click on „Iniciar Sesión“:
If you don’t have an account yet:
Create an account:
→ „No tienes una cuenta?“ and click on „Crea un acá“. - Fill in the form:
Enter your details and log in with your new access data. - Important confirmation:
Under „Declaro que:“ click on the box next to „Certifico que he leído y acepto las condiciones del trámite como su valor.“ and click on „Siguiente“. - Data verification:
Select „El título de los datos ingresados“ and choose „Siguiente“. - Extension of the Chilean residence permit:
Click on „Prórroga de Permanencia Transitoria“ and click on „Siguiente“ again. - Complete the form: Fill in everything completely and click on „Volver“.
Unfortunately, the form cannot be sent without a Chilean telephone number. Our trick: area code: Simply enter +56 (Chile). Phone number: Enter 123456789 – this worked for us without any problems. Under „Información de la Tarjeta Única Migratoria (TUM)“, enter the details of your residence permit – this is the small piece of paper you received from the PDI when you entered the country.

After this step you will be directed to the payment page
After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation by e-mail. The final extension of your Chilean residence permit will also be sent to you by email. We have simply printed out the confirmation and placed it in your passport – so you are always on the safe side if someone asks you about it.
